Is the Government of Malaysia is Planning to Decriminalize the Use of Kratom?

GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia November 4th 2019.

The discussion of Kratom being made legal in Malaysia and being made available to Malaysians for medicinal purposes was discussed again on Monday.

Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman

It looks like the government of Malaysia is not in any hurry to legalize kratom in the country. The government needs to draft a clear and also solid plan initially before allowing the use of kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) in society.

Ministry of Home Matters replacement Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman claimed the plan should be made first to prevent certain people and situations from mistreating or abusing kratom.

" The trouble is that some extremely creative individuals may change the chemical makeup of kratom. This is what we are worried about. We are worried of misuses occurring after we decide to legitimize its use. That is the issue.

" We cannot allow it for public usage if there is no clear policy on its control and also usage. We don't wish to add to the current national drug issues which is a concern to the federal government," he told a media seminar today.

Azis is also the president of the Malaysian Drug Prevention Association (Pemadam). He also stated that Pemadam was very much against legalizing the use of Kratom.
